Besides the expensive price point, there are many reasons to adore Winston-Salem’s most sought-after neighborhood, Buena Vista – beautiful trees, manicured lawns, older homes with character, and spacious lots. If you like these community characteristics but don’t have the budget for the most expensive homes in the area, this article is for you. Here, we’ve listed six more affordable upscale neighborhoods. These are not the most affordable communities, but they are ideal for those wanting a home in the mid-400s in one of the area’s upscale, established neighborhoods.
Sherwood Forest
Sherwood Forest is a little farther away from downtown but within easy commuting distance for work or shopping. It has a more suburban feel—houses have larger lots, bigger floor plans, and many mature trees. Most houses were built in the 60s and 70s, but New Sherwood Forest's newer section boasts some homes built from the 80s into the 2000s. The home price average from August 2022 to August 2023 was $480,000, but the price range varies considerably.
West End
West End is a popular, historical neighborhood in Winston-Salem. It's one of the oldest neighborhoods in the area, but it's going through quite a renaissance at the moment, with lots of shops and restaurants opening up that make it an excellent place. Another tally on the plus side for the West End is that it's very walkable and close to downtown, but it has hilly, windy roads that give it a cozy, private feel.
Huntcliff
Huntcliff is a neighborhood community off S Peace Haven Rd, convenient to Calvary Day School and down the street from drug stores, restaurants, shops, and a Harris Teeter. The styles of homes vary, but most are large, well-maintained, and pristine ranch-style homes built in the early 1980s. This reputable neighborhood has a suburban feel and the best price per square foot on this list, perfect for growing families.
Shallowford Lakes
Shallowford Lakes is an established residential community in Lewisville, just west of Winston-Salem. As the name suggests, Shallowford Lakes is a neighborhood around a lake. The established neighborhood has been around since the 1970s. The homes' prices do not vary widely, with most in the $400,000s. Shallowford Lakes provides the backdrop of a natural country-like setting but offers all the convenience and benefits of a residential community.
Meadow Brook
The beautiful, established Meadow Brook neighborhood is tucked away in Clemmons, west of Winston-Salem. The community blends in with the back country roads between Clemmons and Lewisville. The community is conveniently located near I-40, Tanglewood Park, restaurants, shops, and a Harris Teeter. Situated around Lasater Lake, many Meadow Brook residents enjoy lakeside water views. The style of homes varies from stately and traditional to mid-century modern and everything in between. The properties sit on large plots of land, offering privacy.
Bermuda Run
Bermuda Run is a sophisticated golf course community offering a luxurious lifestyle, views of the greens, and amenities. Most homes in the neighborhood were constructed in the 1970s. Like Buena Vista, some homes in Bermuda Run are mansion-like, while others are more modest.
