Foothills Brewing, one of the stalwarts of the local scene, has been a cornerstone since 2004. Their annual Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout release, brewed with cocoa and coffee, attracts beer aficionados every February. Foothills has expanded beyond its primary brewery to offer additional venues catering to different aspects of the craft beer experience.

Foothills Footnote is a tasting room and pilot brewery in downtown Winston-Salem, adjacent to the Bookmarks bookstore. It serves as a smaller-scale extension of the main brewery, where patrons can sample a rotating selection of experimental and limited-release beers.

Foothills Tasting Room is a hidden gem. Uncharacteristic of typical community gathering spots, it is smack dab in the center of a boring business park. Don’t let that deter you; this place is neat and attracts a good crowd! This location serves as the primary production facility for Foothills Brewing and offers a selection of beers on tap. It provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the brewery’s production process and is occasionally open to the public for special events and tours.

Local Favorites and Hidden Gems

The charm of Winston-Salem’s brewery scene lies not just in its beer but also in the warm and welcoming community atmosphere. Wise Man Brewing, a local favorite, offers a range of styles, from the crisp and refreshing Mountain Calling West Coast IPA to the complex and flavorful Body Electric Belgian Tripel. The brewery’s laid-back atmosphere, with board games and regular food truck visits, makes it a perfect spot for a casual hangout.

Fiddlin’ Fish Brewing Company is another gem in the heart of the city. With a nod to the area’s Appalachian roots, this brewery offers a rotating selection of innovative and deeply connected local culture beers. Their Fish Tales Pale Ale and Twisted River Wit are particularly popular among locals and visitors.

A Community Hub

More than just a place to enjoy a good beer, Winston-Salem’s breweries serve as vibrant community hubs. They host a variety of events, from live music and trivia nights to yoga sessions and art markets, providing a platform for locals and visitors to connect and enjoy. Incendiary Brewing Company, located in the bustling Bailey Power Plant, is a prime example of this. Its expansive outdoor space and communal vibe make it a popular gathering spot for locals, fostering a sense of community and shared experiences.

Sustainability and Local Sourcing

Winston-Salem’s breweries are not just about great beer, they’re also about a commitment to sustainability and local sourcing. Hoots Beer Co., for instance, prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients and sustainable practices. Their unique offerings not only highlight the best of what North Carolina has to offer but also inspire a sense of respect for the environment. By supporting local breweries, you’re not just enjoying a good beer, you’re also contributing to a more sustainable future.

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
