Final Thoughts on What Makes Winston-Salem Home for Me

As someone who has called Winston-Salem home for years, I can say firsthand that this city has something special.

It’s not just about the affordable cost of living, the job opportunities, or even the cultural scene—though those are all huge perks. It’s more about the balance Winston-Salem strikes between being a vibrant, growing city and where people still smile at you on the street and ask how your day’s going. Whether you’re considering moving here or just curious about the area, let me walk you through my favorite things about living in Winston-Salem.

The Perfect Mix of Old and New

Winston-Salem is a city where old and new are juxtaposed everywhere. I can only begin to describe its character by mentioning its Moravian and tobacco roots, which I’ll briefly explain.

Moravian Roots

Bethabara, Bethania, and Salem (now Winston-Salem) were the first Moravian settlements in North Carolina in the early 1750s. In 1849, the church sold a tract of land adjacent to Salem for a new colony named Winston in honor of Major Joseph Winston, a local Revolutionary War hero. The two towns merged in May 1913, becoming Winston-Salem, giving the city the nickname “Twin City.”

Today, many residents of Winston-Salem dawn a Moravian star from their front porch to pay homage to the town’s Moravian roots.

The historic area of Salem is known as Old Salem, where many buildings are original structures. Some homes are private residences, while others are the property of Home Moravian Church, the Moravian Church Southern Province, and Salem College. Old Salem Museums and Gardens offers a historically accurate re-creation of Salem from 1766 to 1840.

Tobacco Money

In 1875, R.J. Reynolds established a tobacco factory. By 1914, Camel cigarettes had become the top-selling brand worldwide, propelling Winston-Salem to become the largest city in North Carolina for several decades. The cigarrette industry has been on the decline (for obvious reasons), causing Winston-Salem to reinvent itself, a process that didn’t happen overnight. Keeping it’s soul, the city has slowly and organically transformed itself over the past 20 years. The old tobacco factories in Winston-Salem’s downtown are now modern developments, like the Innovation Quarter, a thriving center for technology and healthcare startups.

Living here means experiencing history firsthand while enjoying the amenities of a modern city. For example, in the morning, you can sip coffee in a centuries-old building before heading downtown to a cutting-edge coworking space.

The Cost of Living is Just Right

Winston-Salem is one of the most affordable cities in North Carolina, a significant draw for professionals and families. Whether you’re renting or buying a home, your dollar goes further here compared to cities like Raleigh or Charlotte. The median home price is below the national average, and you get more space, a yard, and access to all the perks of living in a mid-sized city.

And let’s not forget the food! From classic Southern barbecue to trendy farm-to-table dining, the restaurant scene is diverse and delicious without the hefty price tags you’ll find in larger cities. Whether you’re grabbing lunch at Foothills Brewing or dining at 6th & Vine, eating out feels like a treat without breaking the bank.

The Arts Scene: Creative Energy Everywhere

One of Winston-Salem’s proudest claims is being the “City of Arts and Innovation.” The city is home to the prestigious UNC School of the Arts and breathes creativity. From music to theater to visual arts, there’s always something happening. You can catch live performances at the Stevens Center, check out local artists at SECCA (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art), or visit one of the many galleries that dot the downtown area.

Throughout the year, festivals celebrate the city’s artistic spirit. The International Black Theatre Festival is a must-see, drawing talent and visitors from around the country. The RiverRun International Film Festival showcases independent films, while the Winston-Salem Symphony brings world-class music to local audiences.

A Safe Community Feel

Even though it’s the fifth-largest city in North Carolina, Winston-Salem has managed to maintain a small-town feel. Neighbors look out for one another, and it’s easy to build connections in the community. You can feel the sense of togetherness in neighborhoods like Ardmore, where residents congregate in Miller Park and the community Facebook group. The area’s historic charm gives the urban neighborhood a sense of quaintness.

For a more suburban or rural lifestyle, nearby areas like Pfafftown, Clemmons, or Lewisville offer a quieter pace and are still within easy reach of Winston-Salem’s amenities and downtown. Whether you live in the heart of the city or just outside it, Winston-Salem offers that hard-to-find balance between city amenities and community warmth.

Outdoor Living and Adventure

Living in Winston-Salem means being surrounded by natural beauty. Whether you love hiking, biking, or just relaxing in a park, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get outdoors. Hanging Rock State Park and Pilot Mountain State Park are short drives away, offering scenic trails, waterfalls, and stunning views of the North Carolina Piedmont. For a more leisurely day outdoors, Salem Lake is the perfect spot for walking, running, or kayaking.

Closer to home is a favorite for residents who want to enjoy a peaceful walk through beautifully maintained gardens and wooded trails. And if you’re into golf or tennis, Winston-Salem’s country clubs and sports complexes cater to a variety of athletic interests.

Growing Job Market

In recent years, Winston-Salem’s economy has diversified, shifting away from its historic reliance on tobacco toward industries like healthcare, education, and technology. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is one of the area’s largest employers, and the Innovation Quarter’s growth has brought in tech startups and research firms, making the city a rising hub for innovation.

For entrepreneurs, the city’s lower cost of living and investment in tech infrastructure provide fertile ground for startups. For those in the creative and arts industries, the essence of the UNC School of the Arts and strong community support make Winston-Salem a great place to live and work.

Nightlife and Entertainment

When the sun goes down, Winston-Salem comes to life with a range of nightlife options. Whether you’re looking for a low-key evening at a cozy bar or a night of dancing, there’s something for every mood. Foothills Brewing is a go-to for craft beer lovers, while spots like Tate’s, 6th & Vine, and Joyners offer a more intimate vibe with great cocktails. For those who love live music, The Ramkat hosts local and touring acts, and Recreation Billiards is perfect for a casual night out with friends.

If you’re in the mood for something more eclectic, Bar Pina or Vintage Sofa Bar have unique atmospheres, while ALV Nightclub is where to go if you feel like hitting the dance floor.

Education and Family Life

Winston-Salem is an attractive place for families, thanks to its excellent public and private schools and family-friendly atmosphere. There are plenty of parks, museums, and educational resources to keep young minds engaged. Kaleideum is a children’s museum and a popular weekend destination for families with kids.

The city’s central location also means that beaches and mountains are just a few hours away—perfect for family getaways.

Final Thoughts: I Love Living in Winston-Salem

Living in Winston-Salem feels like being part of a city on the verge of something big while still holding onto its historic roots and tight-knit community feel. The cost of living, combined with its cultural scene and steady growth, makes it an appealing choice for people looking for the best of both worlds—a modern lifestyle with a dash of Southern charm. Whether you’re a young professional, a family, or someone looking to start fresh, Winston-Salem offers a welcoming place to call home.

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
