Each of these places provide Winston-Salem residences and visitors an opportunity to learn, explore, dine, shop, and relax! It truly is an all-encompassing destination for an ultimate day of fun. Whether you are a family looking for something to keep the kids busy or a couple looking for a romantic date experience, Reynolda has something for everyone.

A Founding Family and Destination that are Crucial Pieces of Winston-Salem History

What we now know as Reynolda originated as private property owned by the Reynolds family. Many people, even locals, do not always know the impressive and extensive history of Reynolda. This history helps us to understand how this beautiful area came to be what it is today.

Katherine Reynolds, wife of R.J. Reynolds, began purchasing land in 1906 and after 13 years acquired 27 acres of land. Construction of the Reynolda Grounds and House began in 1912 and the Reynolds family moved into Reynolda House in 1917. Their family lived in this home for many years.

Over a decade after the death of both R.J. & Katherine Reynolds, Charles H. and Mary Reynolds Babcock purchased Reynolda in 1935. In 1946, the Babcocks donated 300 acres of the Reynolda estate to Wake Forest College. However, it wasn’t until 1958 that the Gardens were donated to the college as well.

Almost a decade later in 1967, Reynolda House opened as the Museum of American Art. The museum has showcased art from some well-known artists, such as, Georgia O’Keeffe, Gilbert Stuart, Mary Cassatt, Frederic Church, and Jacob Lawrence. Construction on the Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing, began in 2003 and was completed in 2005. It includes:

  • Education studios
  • 3,000-square-foot gallery
  • Auditorium
  • Visitor orientation gallery
  • Fine art and archival storage spaces

In 1977, Wake Forest University began plans for Reynolda Village. They turned old farm buildings and cottages into the classic and inviting Reynolda Village we have today.

Currently, Reynolda is home to Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Reynolda Gardens, and Reynolda Village.

Learn & Explore at Reynolda

There is so much to learn and explore at the museum, gardens, and grounds. When visiting Reynolda House you can tour the house as well as see current art exhibits. They have numerous events here as well, such as movies under the stars and homeschool days.

Reynolda Gardens allows nature lovers to see many beautiful plants. In the Spring, the cherry blossoms are stunning. These are a recent addition to the gardens and were planted in 2020. Even in the winter months, the pillars and arches provide beautiful backdrops for an impromptu photo or spot to read a book. The greenhouse is home to plants from across the globe. Furthermore, the grounds themselves have plenty to see and explore. There are several wooded trails to walk or run on. Don’t miss the picturesque and tranquil waterfall. Be sure to also check out the wetlands and ‘retired’ boathouse. Dogs on leashes are welcome on the grounds.

Jeff Valentino

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
