Salem Lake is the largest lake in Winston-Salem and absolutely worth a visit – or even multiple visits. It boasts breathtaking views, great fishing, and some of the best-wooded trails in the city. Once you are there, it feels like a natural wonderland, and it’s hard to believe it’s merely minutes away from downtown Winston-Salem! In addition to its water’s gleaming beauty and the surrounding park, Salem Lake serves an essential purpose in our city.

History & Purpose of Salem Lake

When you visit Salem Lake, it’s hard to believe it’s more than just a beautiful place for residents and visitors to enjoy. But did you know that Salem Lake is a major municipal water source reservoir for the city of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County?

In 1911, the original dam was built across Salem Creek, creating the Salem Lake reservoir. A third dam was built in 1931 and is still in operation. It holds back 1 billion gallons of water. This equates to 30% of Winston-Salem’s drinking water.

The dam created the 365-acre lake we now know as Salem Lake. Additionally, the lake is surrounded by 1,400 acres, known as Salem Lake Park.

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
