Seven Reasons To Love Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem, NC, has always been full of reasons to love it, and those reasons keep growing each year. As more people move to and visit Camel City than ever, locals preserve their culture and traditions, ensuring their city’s character and heritage remain vibrant for generations to come.

  1. Hospitality: Winston-Salem has boutique hotels and Airbnbs with character as unique as the city. The experiences are so distinctive you can plan a getaway without leaving the city.
  2. Wine: With around 200 wineries and 400 vineyards across the state, North Carolina ranks 10th in the U.S. for wine production. Surry and Yadkin counties are west of Winston-Salem and are part of the Yadkin Valley wine region, which has the state’s highest concentration of vineyards and wineries
  3. Locally-owned businesses: Winston-Salem has various shopping options for fashion, art, antiques, vintage finds, and local crafts. Unlike most mid and large-size cities, Winston-Salem’s shopping centers aren’t exclusive to major retailers. Although you can still find all the run-of-the-mill chain retailers, many of Winston’s shopping meccas offer ample local opportunities.
  4. Seasons: Winston experiences all four seasons. Although the winters are colder than most other states in the south, they are relatively mild. There is little snowfall, with temperatures rarely dipping below 30 degrees. Summers are undeniably hot, so most people’s favorite times of year in Winston are fall and Spring because the temperatures are moderate and comfortable. You can’t beat the fall foliage in Winston, and Spring brings fresh, beautiful blooms.
  5. Coffee: Some may think that coffee shops are a dime a dozen, but Winston-Salem’s best coffee businesses consistently bring something new and different to the city. These local businesses find a way to stand out and provide diverse vibes and products—there’s undoubtedly something for everyone!
  6. Community events: Winston-Salem and the Piedmont Triad area offer an array of events throughout the year, celebrating arts, culture, community, and the changing seasons.
  7. History: Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, known for its preserved Moravian community and heritage. It’s a living history museum that showcases the lifestyle, culture, and traditions of the Moravian settlers who founded the area in the 18th century. The district includes restored buildings, gardens, and craft demonstrations, offering visitors a glimpse into early American life. Old Salem’s history makes it a gold mine for hidden gems, which you can search for on a whim. If you want a deeper dive into Winston-Salem’s history, a day trip to Old Salem is always fun!

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
