This Winston-Salem Business Makes Every List of “Best Bakeries in North Carolina”

Winkler is the oldest bakery in Winston-Salem, but Dewey’s Bakery usually comes to mind first for those who live in Winston-Salem. Dewey’s Bakery originated in Winston-Salem in 1930 and is the only original business in Thruway Shopping Center. They offer fresh baked goods, including custom cakes, Moravian cookies, sugar cakes, cheese straws, artisan cheese biscuits, and cake squares. You can’t beat Dewey’s cake squares, especially the pink lemonade kind, and Peppermint Ginger Ice Cream Sandwiches with Moravian Cookie Thins during the holiday season.

In 1992, Dewey’s Bakery expanded, creating Salem Baking Company to distribute their Moravian Cookies nationally. Since then, Salem Baking has added additional artisan products since then, but their classic Moravian Cookie stands out, landing on the coveted “O List” from The Oprah Magazine.

In the early 2020s, Dewey’s opened its first Dewzy dessert bar in Greensboro, NC. The Winston Bakery received feedback from customers wanting the whole Dewey’s Bakery experience. Grateful for the opportunity, Dewey’s expanded and turned the Dewzy bar into a Dewey’s Bakery retail store. Also, they are bringing their Dewzy dessert bar experience to Winston starting in August 2023! A Dewzy is a sweet treat with layers of cake, ice cream, and fillings. Each comes with whip cream and a Moravian cookie on top! You can choose from ten flavors or create a combination.

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
