What a Local Wants You to Know About Moving to Winston-Salem: Debunking Myths and Embracing Reality

Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is rich in history, culture, and Southern charm. For those considering a move from out of state, particularly from colder climates or larger urban centers, there are a few myths and stereotypes about life here that need debunking.

Barbecue: Our Neighbor’s Claim To Fame

First off, let’s talk barbecue. While Winston-Salem boasts its share of fantastic barbecue joints, we don’t claim to be the kings of this culinary art. That crown rightfully belongs to our neighbors in Lexington, known for their exceptional barbecue (my favorite is the Honeymonk, better known today as Lexington Barbecue). Here in Winston-Salem, we appreciate the craft without pretension, and you’ll find an array of delicious barbecue options that hail the Lexington name and showcase just that.

A Southern Town, But Not “Deep South”

Winston-Salem is undoubtedly a Southern town in a Southern state, but it’s important to note that it doesn’t embody the “Deep South” stereotype that some might expect. Our culture is a melting pot of influences, blending traditional Southern hospitality with a modern, progressive vibe. You’ll find that people here are welcoming and friendly, eager to share their city with newcomers.

What Pairs With Grits?: A Culinary Surprise

Speaking of Southern cuisine, yes, we do enjoy our grits. However, you might be surprised that we often pair them with shrimp! Grits are more than just a breakfast staple; they’re a versatile dish that reflects our rich culinary traditions.

The Heat is On: Acclimating to the Summers

If you’re moving from a colder climate, brace yourself for the summer heat and humidity. It may feel overwhelming initially, but don’t worry—your body will acclimate over time. And those light layers you used to wear in summer? In Winston-Salem, they’ll likely become your spring and fall attire.

Bring Your Culture!

One of Winston-Salem’s most beautiful aspects is its diversity. We invite you to bring your culture and share it with us! The city thrives on exchanging ideas and traditions, creating a vibrant community where everyone can contribute to the local tapestry.

A Political Swing State

North Carolina is known as a swing state, and Winston-Salem reflects this dynamic with a healthy mix of liberals and conservatives. Generally, we get along quite well, engaging in respectful dialogue and shared community values. You’ll find that our differences often enrich our conversations and relationships.

Diverse Neighborhoods and Family Structures

In many neighborhoods throughout Winston-Salem, you’ll encounter diverse demographics. On the same street, you might find families with two working parents, retirees, singles, and stay-at-home parents. There isn’t a “standard” or “norm” for family structures here. It’s a community where everyone coexists harmoniously, regardless of their lifestyle choices.

A Good-Natured “Damn Yankee” Welcome

If you’re coming from New York or New England, don’t be surprised if you hear locals affectionately refer to you as a “damn Yankee.” It’s all in good fun, and we’re genuinely glad you’ve chosen to make Winston-Salem your new home.

Moderation is Key

While we take pride in our Southern food, it’s a common misconception that we indulge in fried chicken and creamy macaroni and cheese daily. Like any good thing, moderation is key. You’ll find a balance of delicious Southern cuisine and healthy dining options throughout the city.

Many of Us are Transplants, Too

You’re not alone in your journey! Many of us are transplants ourselves or come from families who have relocated to Winston-Salem. We understand the challenges and joys of moving and are here to support you as you settle in.

Explore Beyond Winston-Salem

While Winston-Salem has much to offer, don’t hesitate to look beyond its borders for your new home. The surrounding areas boast beautiful landscapes, charming small towns, and excellent amenities, providing even more options for your ideal living situation.

Downtown Living: Not Always Convenient

Finally, let’s talk about downtown living. Contrary to what you might expect, residing in the center of Winston-Salem doesn’t necessarily equate to convenience. Parking can be a hassle, and grocery stores are few and far between. Personal vehicles are essential for getting around, as public transportation options are less abundant than in larger cities.

Embrace the Journey

As you consider your move to Winston-Salem, remember that this city has its unique rhythm and charm. By debunking these myths and embracing the realities of life here, I hope you get a better sense of what Winston has to offer! If you’re new here, welcome to Winston-Salem—we’re excited to have you join us!

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
