WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Ardmore is the largest residential neighborhood in Winston-Salem, with around 4,300 homes, and is known for its convenient location in the middle of town. Residents have easy and close access to both the major hospitals in Winston-Salem. Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is on the Southwestern edge of Ardmore. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Brenner’s Children’s Hospital are on the Northeastern edge of Ardmore. Both medical centers are accessible via Hawthorne Road, the main road in the middle of Ardmore. Let’s take a closer look at what the area offers.

The Vibe

Most homes were built between 1940 and 1969, making Ardmore historically charming. Within greater Ardmore is the Ardmore Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and includes more than 2,000 homes. The feel of the neighborhood reflects the local, artsy, and eclectic vibes of Winston-Salem. The area’s walkability gives it a “city feel.”

The Lifestyle

Ardmore is dog- and pedestrian-friendly, with sidewalks, crosswalks, and public parks. Many neighbors leave dog bowls by the sidewalk for thirsty puppies walking by. Miller Park offers a reprieve from the hustle and bustle as a neighborhood park filled with tall, shady trees, nature walking trails, playgrounds, tennis courts, horseshoes, picnic shelters, and a baseball field.

The Homes

The homes in Ardmore are historically charming, with many character and architectural details. Styles include Craftsman bungalows, Victorians, and traditional cottages. Some homes have 3-4 bedrooms and 1-2 bathrooms, while others are smaller, with two bedrooms and one bathroom.

The Location

Since Ardmore dates back to the early 1900s, much of the city’s development occurred around the neighborhood. Today, the area offers convenience to downtown and other major shopping centers. Thruway Shopping Center is located at the neighborhood’s north end and is home to great food and shopping, like Chopt, The Carving Board, Trader Joe’s, several clothing boutiques, and The Loop Restaurant. Across from Thruway is another shopping center with more popular restaurants and retail centers, including Midtown Café, Little Richard’s Bar-N-Que, Nitsa’s, Ski & Tennis, Nawab Indian, and more. Ardmore also has a small shopping center, Ardmore Village, a strip across from the neighborhood Food Lion. It may be small but includes three long-time local favorites – Ardmore Coffee, P.B.’s Takeout, and Café Arthur’s.

Residents have easy and close access to the major hospitals in Winston-Salem since the neighborhood sits between Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center on the Southwestern edge and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Brenner’s Children’s Hospital on the Northeastern edge. Both medical centers are accessible via Hawthorne Road, the main road in the middle of Ardmore.

Hi, it’s Jeff Valentino. In 2019 my 2 sons and I packed up and moved to Winston Salem from the suburbs of Chicago. We didn’t know one person here. I wished there was a resource for people like me who are considering a similar move, so I decided to make one!
